Metta - The Practice of Loving Kindness
A 7-week Online Meditation Course

In these chaotic times it seems extremely difficult to keep our heart/minds open to what is occurring, but at the same time we know that it is essential that we do. The Buddha's teachings on Loving Kindness are the best solution to this problem.

In this seven week course we will look at the Metta Sutta, the Buddha's teachings on Loving Kindness, and see how they can be directly applied as a meditation practice. In the Theravada Buddhist tradition Metta holds a special place as a balance to the mind centered practice of Vipassana. Metta is heart centered. It is the practice of consciously cultivating thoughts of loving kindness towards an ever widening circle of beings; self, those you admire, friends, strangers, those you have difficulties with, and all beings in general. At the same time Metta is a deep, calming concentration practice. No previous meditation experience is necessary.

Each session will start with chanting the Three Refuges. The first week we will sit for 1/2 hour and then take a close look at the Metta Sutta. Each week after that there will be a short meditation period to settle the body and mind, followed by detailed instructions, followed by a longer sitting where we can immediately practice these instructions. At the end of each session there will be time for questions and discussion.

All of these sessions will be on Thursday nights from 7-8:45pm. It would be best to attend all the sessions to get a complete understanding of the practice. However each session will stand on its own and people are welcome to attend any or all of them. All the teachings will be recorded, and the recordings will be put on this web site, so if you do miss a week it will be easy to "catch up".
