Mindfulness Wisdom Teachings – The Satipatthana Sutta
An 9-week Online Insight Meditation Course
March 5 - April 30
Insight Meditation (sometimes known as Mindfulness) is based on the teachings of the Buddha. In these nine sessions we will progressively examine and then practice the instructions on meditation as laid out in the Satipatthana Sutta, the Buddha’s principle teaching on mindfulness. This is the practice of bare attention, of learning to simply be with whatever is arising.
This course is suitable as both an introduction to the practice of meditation for complete beginners and as a way for more experienced practitioners to look more closely at the Buddha's teachings. In this course we'll see how the sutta covers all the important teachings of the Buddha and how we can be mindful of them.
- mindfulness of breath and body
- vedana (how we label everything
we experience as one of three things; pleasant, unpleasant or neutral).
- the three poisons (greed, aversion and delusion) and how to work with them.
- the five kilesas (obstacles to practice).
-
the five aggregates of clinging (how we constantly create a sense of a separate self.
- the seven factors of awakening (the way the practice
progresses once mindfulness is established).
- the four noble truths (where the Buddha,s teaching both begin and end).
Each session will start with chanting the Three Refuges, a short meditation period to settle the body and mind, followed by detailed instructions taken from the sutta, followed by a longer sitting where we can immediately practice these instructions. At the end of each session there will be time for questions and discussion.
All of these sessions will be online onThursday Evenings from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. It would be best to attend all the sessions to get a complete understanding of the practice. However each session will stand on its own and people are welcome to attend any or all of them. All of these sessions will be recorded and will be placed on this website here, so if you do miss a week it will be easy to "catch up".
