My
Yoga Teacher, Richard Freeman, often says that the most
interesting things happen not within an individual system,
but where two systems interact and have to accomodate each
other. I decided I wanted to explore this idea on canvas.
What would happen if two patterns, in this case a black
and white "tiling" and a stained glass pattern
I'd designed years before, randomly occupied the same plane
at the same time.
The eye generally
sees one pattern as dominant, but which pattern dominates
keeps switching back and forth. Sometimes, when you are
lucky, you can mentally hold both patterns simultaneously.
